N. Lovergine is Associate Professor of Solid State and Semiconductor Physics at the Engineering Faculty of the University of Lecce (now named Univ. of Salento). After receiving his first degree in Physics (magna cum laude) from the University of Bari in 1987, since January 1988 he was then at the University of Durham (UK) as Visiting Scientist, where he studied the application of MOVPE to Hg-based II-VI semiconductors for IR sensors, under the late prof. J. Woods. In April 1989 he moved to the University of Lecce, where he worked at its Department of Materials Science on the application of wide band-gap II-VI semiconductors to blue-green light emitting devices for opto-electronics. In 1991 received his PhD degree in Solid State Physics. Since 1992 and until 2001 he worked as University Researcher at the Faculty of Engineering.
The current research interests of Prof. Lovergine concern the physics and technology of III-V and II-VI compound semiconductors for applications to nano-/opto-electronics, X/Gamma-ray detectors, and photovoltaics, with particular focus on the epitaxial growth and physical properties of etero- and nano-structures. As part of these topics he works also on the development of CVD/MOVPE-related technologies and instrumentation.
In the field he has published over 110 papers in renowned international peer-reviewed journals, and conference proceedings and owns an Italian Patent on MOCVD reactor technology. He has authored several book chapters on the MOVPE/VPE technology of semiconductors, and contributed to the 2001 Edition of the Encyclopedia of Materials: Science and Technology (Elsevier) with a chapter on the MOCVD of II-VI compounds. He has given several Invited Talks to international conferences/workshops. Member of the Programme Committees of several International/European Conferences and Workshops on MOVPE and Chairman of the "10th European Workshop on MOVPE" organised in Lecce in June 2003. He serves as referee for several peer-reviewed international journals in the field and has been Guest Editor in Special Issues of the journals Appl. Phys. A (Springer) and Prog. Cryst. Growth & Charact. Mater. (Elsevier).
Prof. Lovergine has been responsible of National and European research projects funded by Italian Ministry for University and Scientific Research (MUR) and NATO, as well as of several industrial research contracts. He is consultant of the MUR, the Ministry of Industrial Activity, and the Regional Government of Puglia for the Industrial R&D activities. Member of the Italian Association of Crystallography (aic) and coordinator of the AIC Crystal Growth Section during the terms 2003-2005 and 2006-2008.
