Since June 2007, the Department of Innovation Engineering is a member of the MIT-Italy Consortium, which promotes the mobility of PhD students between the Italian members of the Consortium and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA

# The Consortium

The MIT-Italy Consortium was launched in 2004 by the MIT-Italy Program and the Italian Embassy in Washington. The objective of the Consortium is to promote collaboration between its italian members and the MIT scientific community through the creation of a communication and exchange network that:

  • facilitates access to MIT, in terms of costs and burocratic procedures, for top doctoral students willing to enrich their academic cursus with a 6/12 months research period at MIT, working in MIT's areas of excellence;
  • encourages MIT doctoral students and young researchers to visit and do research at affiliated Italian Universities and Research Centers
  • gives more visibility, continuity, impact and reciprocity to MIT-Italy exchanges;
  • creates new opportunities of collaboration between Academia and Industry.

# MIT e Italia: il perché del Consorzio

The MIT-Italy Consortium is open for membership to top Italian Universities, Departments and Research Centers whose research and teaching interests match MIT's. It is open for sponsorhip to Italian companies, foundations and institutions wishing to support the Consortium through one or more fellowships in the field of their choice.

# MIT and Italy: the motivation of the Consorzio

At MIT, several international programs have been established, with the aim of contributing to the internationalization of education and research at MIT. Grouped into the International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI) and with different modalities that reflect the cultural, economic and institutional specificities of related countries, MISTI country programs work together with MIT academics and with governments, research centers and companies of the member countries to strengthen the relationships between MIT and these countries. Consistently with the approach that has in large part determined the success of MIT, all programs privilege and promote collaboration and direct contacts between Academia and Industry.

  • 3 to 12 months stages for MIT graduate and undergraduate students at italian companies, laboratories and research centers;
  • interviews, symposia and workshops at MIT and in Italy with the participation of MIT and Italian scientists, researchers and entrepreneurs;
  • initiatives aimed at making MIT more accessible to the Italian research and industry environments, and at giving MIT more familiarity with the italian cultural, economic and scientific reality.
